The Set Dresser usually works ahead of the shooting schedule to fulfill the vision of the Set Decorator so the scene is ready for shooting the scene.

The on-set dresser, on the other hand, is ON SET when the scene is shooting so adjustments to the set can happen at the moment needed, say if the Director of Photography needs the sofa lifted a few extra inches or props need to be arranged for an insert shot.

Once the scene is dressed and ready, it’s on to the next set up to prep.  They are one step ahead of  the shooting schedule.
